Week 21 #4.
Where are our mealworms?
We’ve looked ev’rywhere. It seems
you are holding out.
Day 158, or the day I realized that Chicken has zombie eyes.
(Chicken got back at me later for taking this rather unflattering portrait of her. She jumped onto the backyard picnic table in the middle of dinner and attempted to intimidate us —she’s a bit of a pecker— into giving her a bite of our burgers. We’ve come to realize that chickens aren’t really “chicken” at all…)
Day 127. Spring honey, etc.
Unfortunately, the bees were a little cranky (i.e., our sting count increased by one) for their first full hive inspection of 2011, so no one was able to get any closeups of the bees (or anything else, because everyone who didn’t have a suit fled into the house by the time Karl reached the second super). But additional bee suits have been ordered, so we should have better photos soon… or at least funny pictures of photographers in bee suits.
Day 102. When the nights get below freezing, we load our two hens into a cat carrier so they can spend the night inside. Chickens can survive cold weather just fine if they can get out of the wind, but they can also get frostbite on their combs, etc. Since we only have two birds, moving them inside to avoid frostbite is pretty easy on all parties… well, all parties except the cats, who are mortally terrified of the cat carrier full of squawking hens.
